Magnetic based projectile detection is a very reliable and cost effective means for projectile detection/velocity measurement in both ideal and adverse environments (e.g. near a gun’s muzzle). Magnetic type detectors are “blind” to plastic sabot pieces, shockwaves, gas flow, particle showers, etc. that often accompany a projectile downrange. PAI offers systems that detect the passage of electrically conducting material (active detection) or systems that detect passage of a magnetic field (passive detection) that is traveling with the projectile (i.e., a magnet attached to the projectile or sabot). A system consists of a pair of sensors and a control/driver unit that filters and processes the raw input signals, displays the time interval between the two input signals , and outputs a pair of fast rise, short duration 5 volt output signals. Magnetic sensors for both active and passive detection are available in the form of short hollow cylinders that the projectile passes through or small cylindrical probes that can be installed through a port in the wall of a launch tube.
